Labour Day is a national state holiday in Austria. It is also often called May Day here and is as much about welcoming the fresh spring weather and new life as it is about fighting for workers’ rights.

Labour Day is observed on 1 May each year in Austria and is an off-work day for most of the nation’s labour force. Some choose to spend the day simply relaxing at home with family and friends, working in the garden, or doing some spring cleaning.
Others get out to see a Labour Day parade, take part in a labour union meeting, or find some way to promote desired labour reforms or to celebrate past reforms. If the holiday falls on a Friday or Monday and creates a long weekend, people are more likely to go on mini-vacations in Austria or in neighbouring countries of Europe.
